The Use of Force by William Carlos Williams
On a deeper level the young girl's behavior when her dad had to hold her made me think she was possible abused. The doctor's thaughts of the young girl...made me feel he wasn't exactly all together either. He has many opinions about her physical appearance. Although all this is possible, on the surface the young girl is simply spoiled and her parents are "old fashioned". The father at some point sends the mother out of the room as to say she should let the men handle the situation. The doctor's methods were definitley questionable , but he exscused them well by hinting the little girl could die if he was un able to do his exam. I believe the visit only happened the way it did because it was in a home and not an office (professional setting that demands one to act a certain way). Overall I enjoyed the story, I found it interesting and thaught provoking.

The fact that the setting is a house call is interesting, since it allows certain socio-economic theses to surface.
Below are some comments from "Previous Blogs," which should give you some moer specific poits of focus; to address some of the story's thematic issues noted below, focus on key scenes, character and setting descriptions, the contrasting use of language (parents v. doctor), etc:
think about what those characters represent? The story does explore questions of power, resistance, authority,ec. How many different levels of conflict can you find in the story? We have a child and adult, doctor and patient, etc. How does the story explore conflicts between various aspects of our culture? how are those various "forces" characterized?
the strangeness, or extraordinariness of the doctor's reactions may lead to some interesting discussion of the doctor-patient relationship, but beyond that, questions of power, authority, cultural roles v. human nature, etc. think about what the various characters represent.
no i dont think she was abused she was a brat and any parent grabing their kid to force tem do something feel like they could hurt them by mistake. that the point of view i got.
